It may even be that with Iran broadening its military footprint in North East Syria, a failure to renew the nuclear agreement could lead to Iran losing its current incentive not to rock the boat with the US and instead indulge in some more ‘behaviour’ in a region of Syria currently seen by some possibly complacent US policy-makers as a gift that keeps on giving.
At all events Syria will no doubt continue to be the cockpit in which regional rivalries play out, compounding the difficulties of domestic conflict.”
Hossam told me that Mohammed had a favourite plastic glass. He had left the glass on the windowsill of his parents bedroom. In the hours after the attack, Mohammed asked his father where his glass was. Hossam feared that it would have been destroyed. But the window had imploded sending glass flying and twisting the metal frame. The glass was still upright on the windowsill, untouched. For Hossam and his wife, this was a small miracle, a symbol of hope. I see this so often, in war, among people who have so little to call their own. An item of insignificance for most of us becomes a precious token of survival.
Let us imagine that the Assad-haters’ dreams came true and Assad was successfully starved into making the required concessions? Who can honestly doubt that throwing open the prisons and permitting unfettered return of Islamists would lead to instability which would make post-Saddam Iraq look like a model of order? Or that replenished and revived jihadi fighters in Idlib would break out of their enclave, overrunning neighbouring Christian and Alawite areas with results too horrifying to imagine? Or that in these conditions ISIS would revive? Or that “decentralisation’”would lead to the breakup of Syria long desired by some?
One thing is clear, Biden is not going to repair the devastation caused by a 10-year ‘regime-change’ war – he is going to exploit the poverty, misery and suffering of the Syrian people to attempt full spectrum dominance in the region for the US and Israel. This has the potential to bring the US into direct confrontation with Russia, Iran and Hezbollah in Syria. We should prepare for a turbulent future in the region under Joe Biden. Democrat or Republican, the road map is the same. The only difference lies in the methods used to bring a recalcitrant nation to heel.
20th January 2021 We discuss the situation in Syria with a Biden inauguration looming, Covid-19 symptoms, Vaccines etc.
Two year old Iraqi child, Khadija Uday Hamid, fled with her family from Iraq to the notorious Al Hol camp in the countryside of Hasaka. In collaboration with the UNHCR, the Syrian government provided all the necessary facilities to facilitate treatment for the little girl. Khadija was transferred to Damascus and underwent surgery for a ventricular septal defect (VSD). Surgery was successful.
During the early hours of this morning, Israel launched an attack on multiple positions across Syria – targeting Tartous, Hama and Homs countryside and reports of attacks in Damascus countryside.
