While western audiences were swamped by images of him supposedly saving a child from the Rashideen massacre in April 2017, survivor testimonies that I gathered placed him prior to the planned suicide attack, chatting amicably with the armed groups led by Nusra Front or Al Qaeda in Syria.

The West will not change in the foreseeable future. And also, because the intellectual war is more difficult than a military war and it takes longer to rehabilitate and equip new generations with the right kind of thinking: with non-extremist thought, non-fanatic thought, with open-mindedness. Just as this terrorist ideology has been developed since the 1960s; it took 50 years to reach the stage we are at. It does not appear and spread throughout the world overnight. Hundreds of billions have been spent to establish it and the West has been supporting it since the days of British rule, even before the American presence. They have supported religious extremism since the beginning of the 20th century; so, fighting it needs time.

Syria – challenging Caesar.

The main reason I began this initiative is to decrease the suffering of the Syrian people. I want to offer real job opportunities and to encourage activists and young people to establish their own small businesses. We are a candle in a very dark tunnel but there are people coming back from outside Syria to help rebuild. I want the next generation to look back and thank this generation for not abandoning this country in its hour of need. If the experiment works here in Damascus, we will travel to every other major city in Syria with the same concept.
